Are underwire bras comfortable to wear all day?

Yes, and the ones that are not usually fail on size rather than on the wire. It helps to be clear about the division of labour inside a bra: the band carries the weight, the straps steady it, and the wire holds the shape. Trouble starts when a bra is bought as though the wire were the support, since that usually means something too tight across the ribs and too shallow in the cup, which is exactly the combination that makes a wire hurt.

Most women measured against fitting criteria are in the wrong size, most often with a band too loose and a cup too tight, which forces the wire onto breast tissue and up into the underarm.1 That is what hurts. Why does my underwire dig in?

A wire digs when it is the wrong width for your shape or the cup is too shallow. It should trace the crease where the breast meets the ribcage and sit behind all of the tissue, not across any of it. You can check without a fitting room: put the bra on, lean forward so everything settles into the cups, then run a finger along the wire from the centre outwards. It should stay flat against your ribs the whole way. If it lifts away at the front the cup is too small, and if it digs at the side the wire is too narrow for your shape, in which case a different style helps more than a different size.

Underwire or wireless for a fuller bust?

The difference is shape, not strength, since the band carries the weight in both. A wire anchors the cup edge to the ribcage for more separation and a higher, rounder line under fitted clothes. A wireless style shapes from a deeper band and seamed cups, so the line is softer and closer to natural.
